Hieber’s Pharmacy, located at the corner of Fifth Ave and McKee Place, is the only compounding pharmacy in Oakland and one of only a few around Pittsburgh. It is also an independent pharmacy, something unique in this age of a cookie-cutter CVS’/Rite Aid’s/Walgreen’s/etc’s on every corner.
From Hieber’s website:
“…our mission is to provide customers with high quality, innovative and friendly service. As a compounding pharmacy, we create custom-made prescriptions that are unique to each patient’s need.
Hieber’s Pharmacy is an independent compounding pharmacy that has been operating for over a century. The tradition of excellence continues to this day under the direction of Joe Bettinger and his talented staff. At Hieber’s, state of the art equipment and continuous training ensure high quality preparations to meet your unique medical needs.”
Being in its present location for over 60 years, Hieber’s has an interesting history, including working with Dr. Jonas Salk to distribute the original polio vaccine. You can read more about the history here.
The chief pharmacist, Joe Bettinger R. Ph., is also a very active member of OBID (Oakland Business Improvement District) and the Oakland community in general.
Next time you need a prescription filled, remember that you have a choice. Local independent pharmacies provide great service, unique products (try asking CVS for compounding and see what happens), and best of all, you’re money stays right here in Pittsburgh.
