“Oozing Pittsburgh” Contest Submission: Athens of the New World

Photo submitted by Jake Reinhart:

My inspiration for this contest is the pride that Pittsburghers have for the city. I wanted to capture something that expresses that fierce, undying love. I’m constantly drawn to the Guiseppe Moretti’s panther statues in Schenley Park. Moretti made these sculptures around 1885. Moretti loved Pittsburgh. He believed our city was the “Athens of the New World”. When asked if he’d leave Pittsburgh Moretti said, “I shall not leave Pittsburgh – it is the fine home for the artist – strong, mighty, rugged-so!”

I can only hope to have captured that same enthusiasm, pride and intense determination.
