Waving Flag

Considering we have a national holiday coming up, I figured this would be an good shot to post.I took this photo a few weeks ago along Greenfield Ave just above McGee Field.

Some of the biggest influences on my photography are the street shots that Robert Frank took. He was to photography what Kerouac was to literature. In fact, Robert Frank was closely associated with the Beats. So close, that Kerouac wrote the forward to Frank’s book “The Americans”.

Anyway… the American Flag is repeated often in Frank’s work. After seeing those images, I can help but snap shots of flags whenever I see them. There is something about viewing the flag in shades of gray that changes your perspective on this symbol we’ve seen so many times before. Whatever your political view, you cannot deny what a bold icon the American flag is.
